Christmas Day in America means many things. And no Christmas tradition is more revered than the Yule Log, a crackling, looping broadcast of logs on fire sent directly to your TV. Of course, times have changed. In the age of HDTV and the Internet, is there still a place for the Yule Log in our homes, neigh, in our hearts? Absolutely, but you must be selective. No one should have to put up with an imitation Yule Log experience.

The first Yule Log broadcast occurred in 1966 on WPIX, a local station in New York City, where fire codes and real estate prices resulted in a dearth of actual fireplaces. The footage was shot in 16mm at Gracie Mansion, the home of then Mayor John Lindsay. It was accompanied by Christmas music and is the undeniable progenitor to all the Yule Log recordings that followed.

It was great for its time, but it had limitations. First of all, the 16mm print was pretty low quality. Also, although the original broadcast was three hours long, the clip is just seven seconds. It repeats itself more than Grover Norquist on new taxes.

The scene was reshot in California in 1970 on 35mm film and edited into a seven-minute clip that captures the peak of the fire. This is the clip that has been running since the 1970s and it is what most people think of the when they think of the 'original' Yule Log. You can still catch it 'live.'
