Much like in The Waterboy Adam Sandler plays a dumb yet lovable repressed nobody coming into his powers, except the setting is hell and instead of a losing football game Sandler's character Nicky must save his father, the king of hell. The Waterboy is probably the more effective movie with similar themes but Little Nicky is no slouch, and it has very enjoyable riffs on the theme and some incredible classic moments. There is the wicked funny 'battle' at the end where the minions of hell are disarmed by Popeyes chicken and other of Nicky's inventions, for example.
Reese Witherspoon and Quentin Tarantino make guest appearances as a Legally Blonde-type bubbly blonde angel with a cell phone and a catastrophe-heralding blind soothsayer in a cheap suit on the New York City streets respectively. Just by these two characterizations you should know the type of buoyant brilliance consistent in the film.
The film is actually hilarious. I loved the devil whose punishment for failure was a pair of tits on his head, and the ongoing joke of the pink brassiere he decides to wear and the other romances that develop because of his new assets. There are plenty of other moments of originality and pure devilish humor (guess the torture for Hitler) that does set this film apart in its own right despite having a nod to other Adam Sandler stories.
I give this movie 8/10 because I enjoyed it a super great deal and even liked the message it imparted in its own funny way about the power of small enjoyable things over stark antagonistic entities. I thought it was a successful film with even some rare dimension to it even if partly incidental to the humor. It's a sweet film even though it can be indecent in a way that's kinda hard not to love. Who doesn't want to see some transvestite nipple rubbing now and again. Just me? Ok.
Anyway, do watch this film, it's worth it, even if I took a star off just because I wanted to like the dog sidekick more than I did. This film is definitely better than its 5.5/10 and I would like seeing it get more love than it has.
