Guns for Sale - Rifles For Sale - Bolt Action - Item# 14493144

MODEL OF 1917 REMINGTON 680236 The serial number is way higher than any serial number I've seen attributed to Remington M1917 production. I know that they had some leftover parts some of which were assembled into rifles, and some of which were perhaps sold off to the commercial market.

Serial numbers compliments of Frank Mallory, armscollectors.com. Contracting with Remington (Eddystone Arsenal) and Winchester for their P14 pattern rifle. Feb 27, 2008 - I have recently purchased a Remington 'Model of 1917'.30-06. The rifle is odd in the fact that the serial number (6581XX) is higher than. Make: Remington. Serial Number: 39093. Our Assessment: This Remington Model 1917 around 100 yrs old. It has cosmetic issues but most those have been finished over. Luckily most of the markings are still visible, although some are faded. These markings include “U.S. / MODEL OF 1917 / REMINGTON”, “eagle’s heads” and “flaming bombs”. This rifle is also import marked so it served overseas after World War I. It was later imported back into the U.S. for sales to the civilian market. The rifle will add to your military collection.
Some history from Wikipedia: “The M1917 Enfield, the 'American Enfield', formally named 'United States Rifle, cal .30, Model of 1917' was an American modification and production of the British .303 caliber P14 rifle developed and manufactured during the period 1917-1918….As it entered World War I, the UK had an urgent need for rifles, and contracts for the new rifle were placed with arms companies in the United States. They decided to ask these companies to produce the new rifle design in the old .303 caliber for convenience of supply. The new rifle was termed the 'Pattern 14'. In the case of the P14 rifle, Winchester and Remington were selected. A third manufacturer, Eddystone Arsenal - a subsidiary of Remington - was tooled up at the Baldwin Locomotive Works in Eddystone, Pennsylvania. Thus, three variations of the P14 and M1917 exist, labeled 'Winchester,' 'Remington' and 'Eddystone'. When the U.S. entered the war, it had a similar need for rifles. The Springfield Armory had delivered approximately 843,000 M1903 rifles, but due to the difficulties in production, rather than re-tool the Pattern 14 factories to produce the standard U.S. rifle, the M1903 Springfield, it was realized that it would be much quicker to adapt the British design for the U.S. .30-06 cartridge.. Accordingly, Remington Arms Co. altered the design for caliber .30-06, under the close supervision of the U.S. Army Ordnance Department, which was formally adopted as the U.S. Rifle, Caliber .30, Model of 1917.”

Our Assessment: This Model 1917 was originally made during WWI by Remington but is import marked. During WWII it was most likely sent off to Britain as part of the Lend Lease program to help fight off the Nazis. We don’t know if it saw actually combat but it was around for both WWI & WWII. This Eddystone Model 1917 is in great shape for being almost 100 yrs old. It comes with nice wood, deep markings and tons of history. It rifle will add to your WWI, WWII or Military collection.

Here are some basics on the Lend Lease program from Wikipedia: “The lend-lease policy, formally titled 'An Act to Promote the Defense of the United States”… was an American program to defeat Germany, Japan and Italy by distributing food, oil, and materiel between 1941 and August 1945. The aid went to the United Kingdom, the Republic of China, and later the Soviet Union, Free France, and other Allied nations. It included warships and warplanes, along with other weaponry. The policy was signed into law on March 11, 1941 and ended overnight without prior warning when the war against Japan ended. The aid was free for all countries, although goods in transit when the program ended were charged for.”
